Inspiring Curiosity: Professor Dr Stephen Ashworth Celebrates Mendeleev's Periodic Table at UBD

Professor Dr Stephen Ashworth, a distinguished Professor of Chemical Physics and Science Communication at the University of East Anglia, captivated the audience at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Pro-Chancellor Arts Centre with a talk titled “Elementary! A Celebration of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements” on 21st August 2024.
Dr Ashworth, a distinguished Professor of Chemical Physics and Science Communication at the University of East Anglia, wowed the audience comprising members of public and invited secondary school students with his expertise and passion for chemistry. Renowned for his “Kitchen Chemistry” outreach project, Dr Ashworth demonstrated how the principles of chemistry can be explored with everyday household items. His international acclaim, particularly through his partnership with Scifest Africa, has made him a significant figure in science communication and education.
The talk focused on the evolution of the Periodic Table, tracing its development from Dmitri Mendeleev’s groundbreaking creation to its modern form. The participants were taken on a journey through the fascinating world of chemical elements and their properties. Dr Ashworth highlighted the history and significance of the Periodic Table, emphasising its impact on science and everyday life while sharing intriguing stories behind some of its most remarkable elements.
UBD’s initiative aimed to inspire curiosity and foster a love for research among Brunei’s youth. The event was not just an educational experience but also a celebration of scientific discovery, encouraging students to explore the building blocks of the universe. A lively Q&A session followed the talk, where enthusiastic students posed questions about the Periodic Table—ranging from the reasoning behind the symbol for Sodium (Na) to inquiries about ongoing efforts to discover new elements. The event left attendees inspired and eager to delve deeper into the wonders of chemistry.
UBD continues to champion Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education, nurturing the next generation of scientists and researchers in Brunei.
