Symposium Explores Intersection of Science and Spirituality at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), in collaboration with Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, hosted an enlightening symposium titled “In the Footsteps of Faith: Bridging Science and Spirituality in the Wisdom of the Quran” on Sunday, 29th September 2024. This event explored the intersection of modern scientific discoveries with timeless spiritual teachings from the Quran, emphasizing how these realms can come together to address contemporary global challenges. Held at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Conference Centre, the symposium welcomed scholars, students, and members of the public who sought to deepen their understanding of science through a spiritual lens.
The event featured four distinguished speakers, each providing unique insights on the convergence of science and faith.
Dr. Md Aminul Islam, Associate Professor at UBD’s Faculty of Science (FOS), offered insights on “Geology and the Quran: Exploring the Intersection of Science and Faith.” He examined how modern geological findings align with Quranic descriptions of Earth’s formation, providing a deeper perspective on the relationship between science and faith.
Dr. Norhayati Ahmad, Senior Assistant Professor at UBD’s Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), spoke on “Plants Mentioned in the Quran: A Reflection of Quranic References in Light of Current Scientific Knowledge.” She illustrated how contemporary science resonates with Quranic descriptions of the plant kingdom, emphasizing their ecological and sustainable significance.
Dr. Hamzah Mohd Salleh from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) gave a talk on “The Need for Virtues and Morality Integration in Education for a Sustainable Future,” highlighting how incorporating virtues and morality in education is crucial for fostering sustainability, rooted in Quranic principles of humanity’s role as stewards of the Earth.
The symposium concluded with Haji Muhammad Ruzaini Haji Mohd Daud, an Archaeology Officer at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, who presented “Manifestation of Natural Resources through Innovation and Creativity.” His talk showcased Quranic references to natural resources and their innovative applications in artifacts, reflecting the human talents bestowed by Allah (SWT).
The symposium provided thought-provoking discussions, merging scientific knowledge and spiritual wisdom to address today’s global challenges, and inspired attendees to envision a world where Quranic discourse and modern science work together for a more harmonious and sustainable future.
