PRISM UBD Film Festival 2024: Spotlighting Sustainability Champions Through Short Films

The PRISM UBD Film Festival 2024 concluded with an inspiring awards ceremony, celebrating the exceptional work of young filmmakers across a range of categories. A standout feature of this year’s event was the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) Themes category, which focused on critical global issues such as clean water, waste management, climate action, and social equity.
The festival, recognised under the ASEAN University Network on Culture and the Arts (AUN-CA) since 2022, continues to promote creativity and culture among students in the ASEAN region. Over 50 submissions were received from Brunei and internationally for the Public Service Announcement (PSA) SDG category, this year’s festival highlighted the power of film to raise awareness and inspire action on sustainability and social justice. The films in this category spotlighted urgent challenges like water scarcity, environmental protection, and the fight for social justice, showcasing how storytelling can drive meaningful change.
In the PSA SDG Professional category, Hope Beneath the Waves won the first place for its focus on marine conservation and the protection of Brunei’s coral reefs. Promise of the Forest took second place, emphasising the importance of forest conservation and biodiversity protection. RISE secured third place, exploring the global climate crises and the collective responsibility to address environmental destruction.
In the PSA SDG Student category, Mitya claimed first place for its depiction of a young girl’s struggle for access to clean water. Save Water, Save Lives won second plave, highlighting the importance of water conservation. Voice in the Trash secured third place with its message on sustainable waste management.
Additionally, RISE was awarded the People’s Choice Award. The festival also recognised winners in other categories, including 2YOEL in Comedy; The Night Shift in Smartphone-Made; Blinding Lights in Animation; My Diary Does Not Exist in Experimental; and Lalu Masa in Drama.
